Thank you.

The first Thrive event brought our community together for one honest evening about what Buller could be. Here's what we've distilled from the night so far, what's next, and how to stay in the conversation.

The first event

What happened on the night

Council, iwi, regional agencies, business and community leaders, all in one room for the first time in a long time. The mood was honest, not protective. People named the pressure — recent closures, job losses, reform fatigue, cost of energy, consenting drag — and got on with the harder question: what do we actually do about it.

Themes that emerged
The district has the assets. 84% DOC land, world-class trails, an aged-care expansion, a 10-year food strategy, mining and energy investment, an iwi partner ready to work with us. What it doesn't yet have is a shared story, a streamlined system, and a sustained revenue base that keeps the value here.

The eleven themes that surfaced

01

Identity, story and narrative

02

A long-term vision and a coordinated local plan

03

Real diversification away from boom-bust

04

Tourism, trails and the visitor economy

05

Energy as a constraint and an opportunity

06

Money staying in Buller

07

Workforce, education and the people pipeline

08

Main street, beautification and supporting local

09

Creating an enabling environment addressing regulatory drag

10

A connected local voice that cuts across silos

11

Local food, family and community wellbeing

The full synthesis, including the presentations, table sessions and sticky-note material that fed into these themes, is being prepared and will live here soon.

First event held

The room was full, the kōrero was honest, and eleven themes surfaced across the evening. Big thanks to everyone who turned up, contributed, and stayed for the long conversations after.
